At this time during the summer, we see many patients who are very tan. For those who are recovering from surgery, in particular, it’s important to know that the sun is actually one of the greatest impediments to scars not fading as well as possible. In fact, it only succeeds in whitening scars, thereby increasing their visibility. The inflammation that causes scars to become red and itchy in the first place is a natural part of the healing process that shouldn’t be disturbed. I advise patients with new scars to stay out of the sun; if they have to be outside, I recommend slathering on the sunscreen, which everyone should do, and wearing clothing that covers the scar.
